WINFIELD - Members of the Putnam County Board of Education voted Monday to abolish nearly 40 professional, service and supplemental positions county-wide.
Superintendent John Hudson said while the board voted to abolish the positions, no employees would lose their jobs.
"We were very fortunate," Hudson told the five-member board. "For example, we may have abolished a fourth-grade [position], but needed an extra fifth-grade [position]. No one lost a job or does not have a job because of this. They might be in a different job."
The board voted unanimously to abolish 37 positions, all of which were teacher or school bus-related positions.
Putnam County Schools spokeswoman Micah Osborne said positions often change because of differences in student enrollment from year to year.
The board unanimously voted to abolish the positions, which took effect June 30.
Also at the meeting, the board voted to approve the use of 19 Putnam County Schools buildings as voting precincts for the Oct. 7 special election.
Buffalo High, Buffalo Elementary, Hurricane Middle, Conner Street Elementary, Lakeside Elementary, Winfield Elementary, Poca High, Confidence Elementary, Rock Branch Elementary, Scott Teays Elementary, Eastbrook Elementary, Mt. View Elementary, George Washington Middle, Hometown Elementary, Hurricane High, West Teays Elementary and the former RESA 3 Building in Nitro all will be used as voter precincts in the election.
The board also voted to continue holding its regular meetings on the first and third Monday of each month for the next year - with the exception of July and August when there are five weeks in the month.
The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. July 31 at the central office in Winfield.
