A recent evaluation of the Putnam County Health Department found some improvements need to be made to the department's practices.
The health department received a 79% on a self-assessment conducted by the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department. The self-assessment is modeled after the state's public health performance based standards.
The assessment was conducted in October, but released to Putnam County Health Board members Tuesday.
"This is like a report card in a way. This tells us where we're strong, and where we need to make some improvements," said Michael Brumage, executive director of the KCHD.
The Putnam health department received lowest scores in Community Health Promotion. The KHCD encouraged the health department to undertake an investigation of local health problems and health threats once every five years. The KCHD said that by identifying major health problems, the Putnam County Health Department could better develop community outreach programming at local organizations, schools and businesses.
There were 141 total standards on which Putnam County was evaluated. They scored perfect scores on 111 of those standards.
