Winfield - Putnam County Schools soon will be hiring to fill 14 part-time positions.
The Putnam County Board of Education approved the creation of seven part-time bus operator positions and seven part-time bus aide positions. They'll work with preschool students on Fridays on a supplemental run for the rest of the school year.
The positions were created after some county bus personnel expressed concern with the current schedule for drivers. The positions were not originally advertised to those personnel last year because the timing interfered with the planned bus schedule.
Bus operators receive $20 for supplemental trips, and $2.50 for every 15 minutes worked after the second hour of the trip.
The bus operators who currently have the supplemental run are eligible to apply for the position.
"The person who has the run now may get to get keep the fifth day job," Assistant Superintendent Doug Cross said. "It's about the only fair way we could do it, really."
The positions are only for this year. Next year, the county's preschool schedule will change again to Monday through Thursday, eliminating the need for the new positions.
