The city of Hurricane's annual citywide yard sale will be returning Saturday.

Vanessa Ervin, marketing and development manager for the city, said sales will start at 7 a.m. and last until about 2 p.m.

While neighborhoods typically don't have a problem hosting yard sales, it's harder for people who live along city streets to host a large yard sale, Ervin said.

For residents who don't live in Hurricane or who don't have a yard, a few Hurricane churches are renting out parking spaces.

Jan Rowsey, with the Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, said the church has a few spaces left for $10 each. She expects the spaces to be sold out before the sale on Saturday.

Anyone is welcome to purchase a space, regardless of whether they're a member of the church or not.

Vendors who rent spaces will have to provide their own tables and chairs or other methods of display. The church is only providing the space. Vendors are also allowed to rent more than one space, to either create a larger selling area or to park a car.

Rowsey said parking is extremely limited this year because of construction at the church.

The United Methodist Women will have hot dogs and drinks for sale, and a bake sale inside the church.

Last year, the ladies sold roughly 500-700 hot dogs.

Ervin urged drivers to pay attention to the road, especially since many people park their cars and walk to various yard sales.

"Keep in mind, traffic laws still apply," Ervin said. "Slow down if you're in a crowded space."

Ervin said drivers can park at Hurricane Middle School or First Baptist Church of Hurricane and walk to the sales.

Ervin said advertising a city wide yard sale allows for people from outside the county to visit Hurricane, and hopefully the visitors will stay after the sale to check out local businesses.

Pat Pelley, owner of Books and Brews on Main Street, said he's grateful for the city and the people who participate in community events.

"Any event that's in city limits or local area that draws in people helps all small businesses," Pelley said. "My family and our staff definitely appreciate it."
