For the third straight season, Hurricane will be breaking in a new quarterback, and for the third straight time, it's a senior who's the first-year starter.
But that won't be the only thing new for the Redskins this season as they attempt to get back to the Class AAA playoffs.
Hurricane will not only plug in a new lead running back in senior Nick Williams (5-foot-11, 190 pounds), but perhaps an entirely different approach to its ground game as it works its way through the current three-week summer practice period.
After several seasons of being a predominantly passing team, the Redskins might hitch their hopes to Williams and their offensive line.
"He's probably put on 25 pounds and retained all of his speed,'' Hurricane coach Jeremy Taylor said of Williams, "and with our linemen, right there will be our strength. We're going to run the ball.
"With Conner Watts and Ethan Highlander around last year, [Williams] got overshadowed a lot, but this is his year to shine. He's worked hard, and you can say that about our whole team.''
Williams flashed some versatility last season, carrying 69 times for 384 yards and four touchdowns and catching 38 passes for 596 yards and six more scores.
His thrusts may take some of the pressure off senior quarterback Dylan Plumley, who played mostly at defensive end last year. Plumley follows in the footsteps of Dylan Tinsley (2014) and Blake Stover (2015) as seniors in their first year as the starting QB.
When Plumley does throw, he'll have some intriguing targets to aim for.
James "Boobie'' McDougale, the state 100- and 200-meter dash champion, is ready for duty at wide receiver, and Austin Kerns (6-1, 215) is back at tight end after catching 12 passes for 138 yards and three TDs last year.
"He's a heck of a player,'' Taylor said of Kerns, "especially at the high school level. He's a big-time player, definitely a Division II-type player who'd be the No. 1 pick for a lot of teams. He can do everything - block, catch, he can do it all.''
Kerns fits in well with an interior offensive line that returns three regulars - Cole Runion (6-1, 200), Matt Lindmark (6-4, 255) and Max Hrko (5-9, 210). Runion is ticketed to start at center.
"Hrko is one of the strongest kids on the team, if not the strongest,'' Taylor said.
One addition to the roster comes from Florida - junior Steven Shine (6-4, 215), a defensive end who started last year at Stoneman Douglas (Fla)., where former Hurricane coach Willis May now coaches. Shine may also play some tight end.
Hurricane is out to return to the playoffs after missing out last year with a 5-5 record. The Redskins had qualified for the postseason five times in a row and in nine of the previous 10 years.
"I'm excited about these guys,'' Taylor said. "We've got some good players, some guys who can stand out, and they'll be given the opportunity. Everybody seems like they're all in on the team right now, and that's always a big thing.
"Every kid who's gotten the chance to step up and lead has been there since December all the way up to this week.''
