The Putnam Prosecuting Attorney's Office is warning of a new scam apparently threatening Putnam County residents with arrest if they don't return a call.
The scammer is apparently calling Putnam County residents and claiming to be from the Prosecuting Attorney's Office. This person is leaving threatening phone messages for residents, telling them they must immediately return the phone call or they will be arrested, Putnam Prosecutor Mark Sorsaia said Thursday in a news release.
"This is a phone scam that is designed to prey upon the innocent for the purpose of extorting money by using the threat of arrest and/or prosecution," Sorsaia said. "It is my understanding that a similar scam was instituted previously in which the Putnam County Sheriff's Department was the party being misrepresented as the caller."
Sorsaia urged anyone who receives these threatening phone calls to contact the prosecutor's office at 304-586-0205 or their local law enforcement agency.
