WINFIELD - Putnam County School board members approved a waiver to keep certain high school math classes separate for next school year.
The new college and career readiness standards call for combining trigonometry and pre-calculus, but Assistant Superintendent Doug Cross said Putnam County math teachers prefer to keep the two separate.
"Our math teachers think it better prepares students for Calculus," Cross said.
The high schools in Putnam County operate on block schedules, which allow for the flexibility to keep the two classes separate, Cross said.
The two classes have always been taught separately at the high schools in the county, Cross said.
Board members also approved the levy rates for the 2016-17 year.
At a previous meeting, Putnam County Schools treasurer Chris Campbell said most everything will stay the same as it currently is except for the bond levy, which finances the debt on a 2009 voter-approved bond measure.
Class II properties will pay almost 1 cent less per $100, Campbell said.
